One common concern related to ears is prominent ears. This condition involves the angular relationship between the ear cartilages and their position in relation to the head. Prominent ears can be corrected through a procedure that aims to reposition the ears closer to the head. This corrective surgery is often recommended between the ages of 5 to 7, before a child starts school, as the ear cartilage development is largely completed by then. The goal is to bring the ears to a normal posture and position. Additionally, procedures can address issues such as ear hole overgrowth or complete tearing, which can be resolved with a brief procedure under local anesthesia.
The procedure can be performed under general or local anesthesia, depending on the patient's age. An incision is made behind the ear, and this scar is not visible from the outside. Reformation of the ear cartilages is performed, and permanent stitches may be used for support if necessary.
